Hut Keepers-One-off screening

Set on the West Coast of the South Island in the early 2000’s, Hut Keepers is a documentary about the people quietly working to preserve New Zealand’s backcountry huts – simple structures tucked deep in the wilderness, many of which were on the verge of being lost. When shifting government priorities and bureaucratic hurdles put hundreds of huts at risk of removal or neglect, a group of volunteers stepped in to fight for their survival. What began as solo trips and small-scale efforts has grown into a coordinated movement of trampers, volunteers, and community groups determined to keep these places standing. At the heart of the film is Andrew, whose quiet determination helped spark the grassroots response. Along the way, we meet others who’ve joined the cause all bound by a shared belief that these huts hold more than just shelter. They represent history, memory, and a connection to the land that’s worth holding onto. Hut Keepers is a story about doing what’s right — even when no one’s watching.
